It’s something that most people ask themselves at some point in their working life… ‘Should I quit and start working for myself instead?’

For some it is just a fleeting thought – a daydream to escape the mundane for a moment. But for others, it becomes a question they return to over and over again. If you’re one of them and have been dreaming of going solo for months, if that question just won’t go away, it’s time to seriously consider taking your life into your own hands.

Of course, the itch to do something different isn’t all it takes. You’ll also need the right attitude and skills to run your own business. Here are the signs that you’re not only ready to leave your old career behind, but also that you’re ready to focus on your dreams.

Your Boss is Driving you Crazy

Sure. Everyone has the odd dispute with their boss. But if you feel trapped by restrictions imposed on you by your boss it’s right to consider whether you need one.

Perhaps you’ve come up with innovative solutions that have been shot down because your boss is sticking with their existing antiquated processes. Or maybe their poor project management is leaving you frustrated and unable to perform to the best of your abilities.

If you’re ready to go it alone, you’ll likely think of your boss as inefficient rather than incompetent*. You’ll recognise the weight that comes with their decision-making role, but will have a clear idea of alternative choices you’d have made in their position.

*Unless they really are, in fact, incompetent!

You use Initiative

There are two types of people in this world; those that will complain endlessly about a problem, and those that will get on with the practical task of trying to resolve a problem. The difference is initiative.

A person who uses their initiative is a self-sufficient worker, who is solutions-focused and willing to take ownership of their work. If you instinctively know what needs to be done and seem to be one step ahead of your colleagues when it comes to preparation, it’s a sign that you’ve got what it takes to run your own business.

You do Things Differently

Are you frequently finding an alternative – and better – way to do your job?

Do you tend to work better in the evenings or very early in the morning?

This is a pretty clear sign that you should be working for yourself.

Self-employed people tend to do things differently by nature. And it’s a good job they do, because that’s exactly what is needed to be successful with your own business. The little differences and quirks make up your unique selling point that will keep custom coming your way.

You Look for Development Opportunities

Some people are happy to go through life knowing what they know. But if you’ve got this far, we’re willing to bet that you’re not one of them.

Constant development is a big part of having your own business, whether you’re selling hand-crafted products or delivering a service.

If you’re the kind of person that is always looking for ways to develop your skills and knowledge, then you’re the kind of person that would suit self-employment. Afterall, why should you go through self-development to benefit someone else’s profit line?

You Want to Work for Yourself

It shouldn’t need to be said, but sadly, it does. When you ask yourself the question, ‘should I work for myself,’ and the answer is ‘yes,’ then you should work for yourself!

It may seem like a daunting step to take, but it could be an end to the stagnation and frustration of a job that isn’t bringing you joy. You deserve to enjoy what you do and to reap the rewards of your hard work.

Not sure if you’re ready? Want to talk it over?

If it feels like you’ve got the attitude and skills that you need to work for yourself but you’re still not sure if you’re ready, you may find it useful to speak to a business mentor. A business mentor is there to help you gain confidence, assist you in carving out your own future, and to give advice based on their expertise and experience.

I’d love to chat over your ideas and see if you’re ready to GoSOLO!
